New Skills for the New Information Professional - Time and time again we are faced with new challenges to our role in the workplace. Business, marketing and PR skills should now be part of the every-day attributes that an information professional needs. Additionally, influencing people at the highest level and having a business and commercial mindset, even - indeed especially - when working in a non-commercial environment will go far in establishing the profession as a core function within the organisation.

Working as a consultant in organisations where I help to develop the library and information services, often highlights these issues. Successful functions are those who understand the need for information professionals to embed themselves in the business, raise their profiles and take the lead in information management in all its guises.

SDIS provides advice, consultancy and training for library and information professionals which includes detailed service reviews and also addresses the various roles of a manager, including organisational change and cultural issues which have an effect on information management.
